The Great Love

Jim Young of Youngstown, Pennsylvania, reads of the German war atrocities and decides to enlist in the British army, thus becoming a forerunner of the American forces that are subsequently to leave for the battlefields of Europe. He begins active training at a camp outside London. While enjoying a few hours of leave, he meets Susie Broadplains , a young woman from Australia. She is flattered by his attentions and their friendship soon blossoms into love. However German plotters plan to destroy an arsenal at night and Sir Roger is inveigled into driving an automobile along a London road with its lights turned skyward to guide the Zeppelins. Jim, wounded and home on furlough, detects Sir Roger on the lonely road, follows and traps him in his cottage. Sir Roger turns his pistol on himself rather than be taken alive. Susie finds the "great love" in service for the cause of democracy and her country, with a greater love in sight.

In 1950, in Algeria, in a village in Kabylia, Algerian resistance fighters resisted the French occupation army. Bachir returns to the village to escape the clashes ravaging Algiers. His second brother, Belaïd, the eldest, is convinced of a French Algeria. His family torn apart, Bachir decides to join the war and takes sides against the repression of the French army. The French army is trying in vain to turn the population against the insurgents by using disinformation. The more time passes, the more the inhabitants of the village and surrounding areas, oppressed, rally to the cause of the FLN, their houses and their fields will be burned... Adaptation to the cinema of the eponymous novel Opium and the Stick, published in 1965, by Mouloud Mammeri, the film was dubbed into Tamazight (Berber), a first for Algerian cinema.

The First Tale, "Goodbye Friend": Years after the Iran-Iraq war, a midnight, Moslem, a chemically poisoned veteran, decides to go to the Behesht-e Zahra. In Behesh-e Zahra, Moslem meets his martyred friends and rides around the city on a motorcycle with them. In the morning, his mother finds the Moslem’s dead body on his bed. The Second Tale, "The Momentary Rainbow": A film crew is filming the memorials of the war. Suddenly two Basij members demand the crew to listen to their memories of the war. The crew made an appointment for tomorrow but they don’t show up. The crew goes on a search to find them. They were martyrs. The Third Tale, "The Glass Flower": A young girl spends hours in the train station with a lantern and a bouquet of flowers. She is waiting to hand the flowers to one of the soldiers on their way to the war. Later, everyone finds out that she only hands her flowers to a soldier that will soon become a martyr.
