A selkie is a mythical being of Scottish, Irish and Scandinavian origin: it is a creature that is a seal in water but human on land. When in human form, if a selkie's seal skin is stolen, they can no longer return to their true home in the sea. The Selkie's Lover is a modern-day version of the age-old story, in which a selkie woman is trapped on land in human form. Longing to return to her underwater realm, she unwittingly falls in love with a young fisherman. Though she has fallen for this mortal man, her heart and soul truly belong in the world beneath the sea.
