Biography

Kounosuke Kawakami was born in Yamanashi in 1979, and he currently lives and works in Okayama. Kawakami holds an MFA from Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts, London, and is currently a Lecturer at the Kurashiki University of Science and The Arts. Notable exhibitions include: Refugees Welcome Film Festival, Berlin, 2019; Altered Esthetics, Minnesota, 2019; Nanometri Festival, Fano, 2019; Visions in the Nunnery, London, 2018; The Task of the Translator, Tokyo 2015; Dada-inspired performance and re-enactment of “Sanka Theater”, Tokyo 2015; and Pippy Houldsworth Gallery, 2007. Kawakami has been awarded a Grant for Program of Overseas Study for Upcoming Artists (the Agency for Cultural Affairs 2010) and received a Special Mention for Asia South East – Short Film Festival 2019, and the VOCA Encouragement Prize in 2008. His works are held by the Pigozzi Collection (USA), Elspeth and Imogen Turner Collection (UK), UBS Bank New York (USA), UBS Bank Los Angeles (USA), UBS Bank (UK), Taguchi Collection (Japan), Progressive Art Collection (USA), the West Collection (USA), Wellington Management (USA), and The Dai-Ichi Mutual Life Insurance Company (Japan).
